Girl Before a Mirror – 2013 – Oil on linen
This is a Picasso Study I painted for Elan Hair Studio in NJ. The Salon is filled with mirrors, so I thought this painting might work well in the space. It ended up hanging next to a mirror about the size of the painting and the reflection of the image in the mirror contributes now to its effect.
I changed up the colors from the original as a way to engage in a dialogue with the master, it was an apprenticeship type of practice. There are some color interactions that were turned, inverted, or kept in place, but the original was looked at closely. I free-handed the drawing on the new canvas, so the figure is true to my hand. I painted this from a postcard of the original I picked up at MoMa.
